Nicolas Sbirrazzuoli is University Professor at the Institut de Chimie de Nice. Former director of the Structure Fédérative de Recherche de Chimie, he is also co-chairman of the ICTAC kinetics committee. In the 2000s, he initiated the theme of bio-based polymers derived from biomass that do not compete with food, and created the Eco-Compatible Materials & Polymers (MAPEC) team, whose work is internationally recognized.
Supported by several European projects, the team's research is aimed at designing environmentally-friendly polymers and composites, developing sustainable processes and proposing viable alternatives to petrochemicals.
Currently, his work is focused on the creation of 100% biobased polymers and composites, combining high thermomechanical performance with innovative solutions for materials recycling. He has also developed reference calculation methods, one of which has been integrated into commercial software used in strategic sectors such as aeronautics, automotive, boating, pharmaceuticals and construction.
This transition to sustainable materials and processes represents a major societal challenge: reducing greenhouse gases and pollution by plastics, and improving the competitiveness of companies.
His research has been widely cited, earning him a place in the Stanford-Elsevier Ranking, which lists the 2% most cited researchers in their field, as well as the AD World Highly Cited Researchers ranking.
In 2024, he was honored at UniCA's Excellence Awards ceremony, in the “Highly Cited Researchers” category.
